Many people know a lot about virtual private servers, or VPS for short. Today we’re creating a post for anyone who may be unfamiliar with VPS. We’ll be discussing the basics about what a VPS is and how it works.
What is a VPS?
Virtual private servers were given their name because it’s a completely accurate description of what they actually are. VPS are created by applying special software, called hypervisors, to a single physical machine. These hypervisors break up that machine into many units, each of them a privately functioning virtual machine. Each of these units is called a container. Think about the way an office building may be divided into a bunch of separate offices. While each container (office) does draw from the physical resources of the hardware of the machine (office building) that houses them, they do operate completely independently of each other. That segmentation process, called “virtualization,” is how a single server can be divvied up to create many virtual servers.
How Does VPS Work?
Running several servers on a single machine can sound somewhat complicated, but it’s really not. Each container, being an individual virtual private server, can use its own operating system and run its own software programs and applications without interference from any other containers – despite the fact that some resources are shared to power each of these containers. The containers themselves truly act as independent dedicated resources rather than serving as merely a part of something greater.
Why Choose VPS?
VPS is a great option for anyone who needs a certain level of flexibility from his/her server. Running a VPS instead of using a shared hosting plan enables the user to scale space and bandwidth according to his/her own needs, customize firewalls and run batch files themselves. VPS also make it easier to perform backups, keep data secure, host multiple sites or applications and they provide greater capacity for emailing. For users who need the added flexibility but aren’t quite ready to take on the role of system administrator, managed VPS plans are available.
